Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implants can restore your smile and drastically change your life. A dental implant consists of a small titanium screw, an abutment to provide structural support, and a prosthesis. Implants can support a single dental crown, a bridge (several crowns), or even an entire arch of prosthetic teeth. To receive a dental implant, you must be a suitable candidate and undergo minor surgery. Once the process is complete, you will find the benefits of dental implants far exceed those of other restoration options.

Are You a Candidate For Implant Surgery?

Before we can begin the implant process, we will need to make sure you are a suitable candidate. Because they are made from titanium, dental implants fuse with the bone in your jaw. There needs to be a sufficient amount of existing bone to provide proper support. Patients with significant bone deterioration may need to undergo bone graft procedures. In severe cases, some patients may not be eligible to receive dental implants. Often, implantation is possible and we can begin to develop a treatment plan.

Dental Implant Procedure

The procedure is fairly simple. After you have decided on the size, shape, and esthetics of your restoration, we can schedule the surgery. Before the surgery, we will apply local anesthetic, or use other sedation tactics to provide a comfortable experience. Once you are comfortable, we will begin by making a small incision in your gums. We then gently place the implant into your jaw.

Some implants do not need to be fully submerged in your gums. In this case, we will place a healing cap over the implant to prevent damage and infection. In other situations, your gum will heal over the implant. A second surgery is required to expose the implant and attach the restoration. In both cases, the healing process usually takes about four months. If you are restoring an entire arch of teeth, a temporary denture may be available while you heal.
After the process is complete, and your final restoration is in place, your general dentist will give you instructions for proper maintenance and care.

Benefits of Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implants are a durable and reliable choice when it comes to restoring missing teeth. They can be brushed and flossed like your natural teeth because they are permanently fixed into your mouth. The titanium screw serves as the root component of your tooth and provides the support needed to keep you eating all of your favorite foods.

Implants also prevent bone deterioration. The screw provides the necessary physical stimulation to prevent your jaw from undergoing bone resorption. They can also prevent a misaligned bite. In many cases, the surrounding teeth will begin to compensate for open space. This shift can cause problems with your bite and esthetics. A restoration can bridge the gap, and stop teeth from shifting.

The biggest benefit is their permanence. If properly cared for, your dental implant can last decades or even a lifetime!
